A Hydrogen Ecosystem Model in Port of Hirtshals

The CONVEY project aims to establish an integrated hydrogen ecosystem at the Port of Hirtshals in Denmark. The project will utilize renewable energy from local wind turbines to produce green hydrogen and help decarbonize the operations in the port.

The project includes the construction of a 5 MW electrolyzer, a large-scale hydrogen refueling station for heavy-duty transport, and distribution networks for hydrogen, oxygen & heat – and it thus builds a replicable model for green ports.

Milestones in CONVEY

System Design

2024

  • The energy system will be designed, based on profile of energy carriers and needs of the offtakers of electricity, hydrogen, oxygen and heat.
  • Simulations models will identify the optimal energy system set-up leading to design of a digital energy management and monitoring tool.

Plant Construction

2024-2025

  • Detailed strategy and plan for production, storage and distribution of the green hydrogen, oxygen and heat will be elaborated.
  • Requests for permits and assessment of environmental impact.
  • Construction of connections and pipelines and Installation of the electrolyser, storage and compressor system.

Operation

2026-2028

  • 10% of the hydrogen will be used for fueling 2 cell fuel trucks, substituting diesel.
  • 90% of the green hydrogen will be used to fuel a steam boiler and a dryer for transforming salmon parts into food grades, proteins, and oils for the nutrition sector.
  • Oxygen and heat will be used in a biorefining process that produces nutrition and nutrients from marine biomass.

Modelling for replication

  • Process and results will be documented in a comprehensive model, converted into a business model and replication strategy including roadmaps, as inspiration for other port authorities and relevant stakeholders.
  • A network of interested ports will be established, and members will be invited for workshops and field visits.

GreenZone CONVEY

The objective of CONVEY is to establish an integrated and circular hydrogen ecosystem at the Port of Hirtshals in Denmark. The project will utilize the “excess” renewable energy from local wind turbines to produce 550 tons of green hydrogen yearly to help decarbonize operations in the port.

The project includes the construction of a 5 MW electrolyzer, a large-scale hydrogen refueling station for heavy-duty transport, and distribution networks for hydrogen, oxygen & heat – and through this build a replicable model for green ports.

The hydrogen will be used for fuel cell powered trucks and for biorefinery. Oxygen released as a by-product from the electrolysis, and excess heat produced during the electrolysis will be used for marine nutrition production.

CONVEY is led by a consortium of ten partners: Norwegian Hydrogen, Port of Hirtshals, Greenport North, Hirtshals Transport Center, Vireon, biomega, Onnest, Vendelbo Spedition, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Next Consult and Hydrogen Valley.

The project is supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and its members and is co-funded by the European Union.
